Fabric textures in depth
Characteristics of the category
Fabric and textile textures depend on visible weave structure to read as cloth rather than flat colour. The weave pattern — plain, twill, satin, knit, denim, leather grain — carries most of the material identity. The category also includes non-woven flexible materials (leather, paper, cork, scales) because they share the rendering requirement of soft surface deformation. Fabric textures are best at moderate viewing distance; extreme close-ups can reveal the repeating unit, and extreme distances lose the weave detail that makes the material convincing.
How to apply these textures
For clothing on character models, target a UV scale where individual threads or weave elements read at about 1 to 3 millimetres in the final render. For upholstery and drapery, slightly larger scales work better because furniture is typically viewed from further away. Pair fabric textures with appropriate roughness values: matte cotton at 0.8 to 0.9, silk or satin at 0.2 to 0.4, leather varying by finish. Fabric almost always benefits from subtle normal-map relief — the Normal Map tool can derive one from the base colour.
Colour guide
Fabric palettes depend heavily on the specific material. Denim skews indigo with white warp highlights. Natural linen stays in warm neutrals (cream, flax, oat). Leather spans warm browns from saddle tan to chocolate, plus black. Silk can take almost any colour. Dyed cotton and synthetic fabrics use the full spectrum. The preset palettes on the fabric generators capture typical colour ranges for each material type.
