background-size: 256px 256px;Use as Base Color and generate a Normal map from the texture's value channel for individual scale relief. Add a Clearcoat of 0.3-0.6 and mix with an iridescent Shader-to-RGB for reptile skin sheen.
In Unity, use a Detail Normal map for per-scale surface micro-detail on creature meshes. In Unreal, add a Fresnel-driven color shift in the Material graph for iridescent chameleon-like skin effects.
Use as a clipping mask texture on creature illustration layers in Photoshop. Apply Bevel and Emboss layer styles for 3D scale depth, then use Hue/Saturation to shift colors for different species.
Use for dragon skin, lizard creatures, fish, and snake enemies in fantasy and RPG games. Vary UV scale between 0.5x on large body areas and 2x on joints for anatomically correct scale distribution.
Use as a decorative surface material for themed entertainment venues, aquarium exhibit designs, and biomimetic architectural skin concepts. The organic pattern adds visual intrigue to facade panels.

The scales generator tiles overlapping curved shapes in offset rows to produce the overlapping-scale pattern seen on fish, reptiles, and fantasy armour. Each scale is drawn as a convex shape anchored to a grid cell with a specific corner curvature. Every other row is offset horizontally so the scale edges interlock like fish scales rather than aligning like a simple grid. Within each scale, a gradient and optional iridescent highlight runs from base to tip, giving each scale visible three-dimensional shading.
scaleWidth and scaleHeight control individual scale proportions. overlap adjusts how much adjacent rows tuck under one another. iridescence adds a hue-shifting highlight across each scale. colorVariance tints individual scales slightly differently from the base colour.
Fantasy game armour textures, sea creature illustration, mermaid and fish visualisation, dragon-scale costume references, scaled jewellery mood boards, and decorative web backgrounds for fantasy brands.
Fish scales favour a tight pearlescent blue-green with low colorVariance. Reptile scales are earthier — browns and greens with more variance. For dragon scales, push scale size much larger, use a deep base colour (purple, oxblood, forest green), and crank iridescence for that shifting metallic look. Keep overlap above 0.4 for a visually convincing layered effect.
