How the checkerboard generator works
The algorithm
The checkerboard is the simplest procedural pattern: the parity of the sum of floor(x / cellSize) and floor(y / cellSize) decides whether a cell is the primary or secondary colour. This generator extends the basic version with optional diagonal offset for a diamond grid, a per-cell noise overlay for weathered vintage-tile effects, and optional rotation. A soft anti-aliased edge is applied so the checker boundaries remain smooth at any viewing scale.
What the parameters do
cellSize sets the tile size. rotation turns the grid, useful for accent tiles. colorVariance pushes individual cells toward random warm-cool variation, simulating imperfect glazing or sun bleaching. edgeSoftness controls how sharp the boundaries between cells are — keep this near zero for crisp vector look, push it higher for weathered tile feel.
What it's good for
Retro gaming art, tile floor visualisation, racing flag imagery, kitchen backsplash previews, web backgrounds for vintage-themed sites, and as a debugging texture in 3D software. Many artists use a checkerboard as the default checker when validating UV coordinates.
Practical tips
For an Art Deco look, rotate the grid 45 degrees and keep a high contrast between the two colours. For mid-century tile, use slightly-desaturated pastels and push colorVariance above 0.3. The generator has a preset that produces authentic 1950s black-and-white diner flooring at cellSize 0.08.
