How the tile generator works
The algorithm
The tile generator produces ceramic tile layouts by placing rectangular cells on a grid and colouring each according to a combination of fixed palette entries and per-tile noise. Grout lines are drawn as darker strokes between cells, with a configurable thickness that simulates standard ceramic grout widths. Optional variants include running-bond offsets for subway tile, hexagonal grids for bathroom floor tile, and herringbone arrangements for accent walls (the herringbone generator handles that layout specifically).
What the parameters do
tileWidth and tileHeight in fractional units. groutWidth sets line thickness. groutColor lets you match mortar colour. tileVariance pushes per-tile colour variation for hand-glazed or vintage looks. layout toggles between stacked, running-bond, and herringbone arrangements.

Practical tips
Subway tile is typically 3:6 aspect ratio (width 0.15, height 0.075 in fractional units) with white tiles and dark grey grout. Modernist large-format tiles run 1:1 aspect and low grout variance. For handmade ceramic zellij effects, push variance above 0.5 and reduce grout width for a tighter organic look.
