How the grid generator works
The algorithm
The grid generator draws evenly-spaced horizontal and vertical lines using a modular distance function. For each pixel, the algorithm measures how far it is from the nearest grid line and draws a line pixel if that distance is less than half the line thickness. A separate pass handles the intersections, where lines meet, to produce optional emphasis dots or heavier joints. Variants include dotted grids (draw dots only at intersections), dashed grids (apply a sinusoidal mask to the lines), and isometric grids (use a 30-60-30 angle set rather than orthogonal).
What the parameters do
spacing controls cell size. lineWidth sets stroke thickness. emphasisEvery highlights every Nth line in a darker or bolder colour, which is how graph-paper lookalikes are produced. gridStyle toggles between solid, dotted, dashed, and isometric layouts.
What it's good for
Graph paper backgrounds, blueprint and architectural drawing aesthetics, wireframe UI mockups, technical illustration, presentation slide backgrounds, and CSS backgrounds for engineering-themed sites. The isometric variant is particularly useful for pixel-art and 3D-visualisation contexts.
Practical tips
A light grid on a near-white background reads as graph paper. Reversing the contrast — dark background with bright grid lines — reads as blueprint. For a hand-drafted feel, add a small amount of gaussian noise to offset individual line positions by a fraction of a pixel, which breaks up the mechanical perfection.
