How to Use Your Herringbone Pattern Generator Texture

CSS Background

Tile as a CSS background for interior design and architecture website sections. Use background-size tuned to show 3-5 full zigzag repeats for an identifiable herringbone pattern at screen scale.

background: url('texturize_herringbone.png') repeat; background-size: 256px 256px;

Blender

Use as Base Color with UV coordinates aligned to the zigzag direction for realistic parquet flooring. Add a subtle Bump map at 0.01-0.03 strength to define individual plank edges within the herringbone arrangement.

Unity & Unreal Engine

In Unity, apply with a detail Normal map to separate individual planks within the herringbone layout. In Unreal, use a Material Function that adds per-plank color variation by masking individual bricks with a procedural offset.

Photoshop & Figma

Use as a flooring texture in Photoshop for interior design mockups with Perspective Warp applied for floor plane views. In Figma, apply as an image fill on rectangles for sophisticated background elements in luxury brand presentations.

Game Development

Use for upscale building interiors, parquet flooring, decorative brick walkways, and woven textile patterns in simulation and RPG games. The zigzag layout adds visual sophistication to floor surfaces.

Architectural Visualization

Classic for hardwood parquet flooring, brick paving patterns, and tile arrangements in residential and commercial interior renders. The herringbone layout is a timeless architectural flooring pattern.

Print & Packaging

Use for luxury brand packaging, interior design catalogs, and premium stationery backgrounds. The herringbone pattern communicates traditional craftsmanship and refined taste.

Social Media & Video

Creates a sophisticated, elegant backdrop for interior design content, luxury brand posts, and lifestyle photography. The classic zigzag pattern reads as upscale and intentionally designed.

Herringbone Pattern Generator FAQ

Are these textures seamless?▼
Yes. Every texture produced by our generators is designed to tile seamlessly in all directions. You can repeat the image horizontally and vertically without visible seams, making it ideal for large surfaces in 3D rendering, web backgrounds, and game environments.
What sizes can I download?▼
Each texture can be downloaded as a lossless PNG in three resolutions: 1024×1024, 2048×2048, and 4096×4096 pixels. You can also download all three sizes at once as a ZIP bundle that includes a LICENSE file and a settings.json with the exact parameters used to generate the texture.
Can I use these textures commercially?▼
Absolutely. All textures generated on Texturize are royalty-free for both personal and commercial use. No attribution is required. You can use them in client work, game assets, product packaging, architectural visualizations, and any other project.
What does the seed number do?▼
The seed controls the random variation of the texture. The same seed with the same settings will always produce the exact same result, making it easy to recreate or share specific textures. Click Randomize to explore new variations, or enter a specific number to reproduce a texture you like.
What herringbone styles are available?▼
Three layout styles are supported: Classic herringbone with staggered rectangular tiles at 90-degree angles, Chevron with mitered tiles forming continuous V shapes, and Double herringbone with pairs of tiles in each position for a more complex pattern.
How do I create realistic flooring effects?▼
Set warm wood tones with the tile color picker, add subtle color variation for natural plank differences, and adjust the bevel slider for defined tile edges. Use narrow gap widths with dark gap colors for tongue-and-groove flooring, or wider gaps for grouted tile installations.
What are common uses for herringbone patterns?▼
Herringbone patterns are used for hardwood flooring visualization, brick paving driveways, bathroom and kitchen tile designs, textile and fabric patterns, wallpaper designs, and architectural renders requiring classic geometric floor layouts.

How the herringbone generator works

Written by kungfury-sketch from hands-on experience building and maintaining the generator.

The algorithm

The herringbone generator tiles the plane with rectangles in the classic zigzag pattern where each rectangle is rotated 90 degrees from its row neighbour. Each tile is drawn as a solid rectangle with slight colour variation per-tile. Grout lines fill the space between tiles. The key geometric insight is that herringbone rectangles are always placed so that the short end of one rectangle touches the long side of another — this is what produces the diagonal zigzag that distinguishes herringbone from simple running-bond patterns.

What the parameters do

tileAspect sets the rectangle proportions — standard herringbone is 3:1 but variants exist. tileColor and groutColor set palette. tileVariance pushes per-tile colour variation. rotation allows the whole pattern to be oriented at any angle.

What it's good for

Flooring visualisation (hardwood herringbone parquet, ceramic tile), fashion prints and textile patterns, wallpaper design, historic architecture references, and branded backgrounds for design-focused contexts.

Practical tips

Herringbone hardwood flooring is the dominant use case — set tileAspect to 3:1, colour to warm walnut or oak, and keep grout width minimal. Herringbone ceramic tile (subway tile herringbone) runs narrower with more visible grout. The pattern has a natural rhythm; avoid rotating it to unusual angles in most design work as it disrupts the zigzag readability.
